Go Fishing

Jesus’ mission to change the world began with the proclamation of God’s activity (“ the kingdom of heaven has drawn near” ) and the calling of some less-than-qualified followers (fisherman, to whom Jesus called, “ Come. Follow Me. I will send you out to fish for people” ). At once they drop everything to follow Jesus, and this ministry of shining light in the darkness and bringing new life to God’s people launches ahead. And while these fishermen might not be qualified, they have been called by The Qualified One to catch people in a net of God’s love. Have you ever thought: There’s a reason it’s called “fishing” and not “catching.” It requires some intentionality; equipment; patience; and blessing (many would say: luck). Does Jesus still call us to “fish for people”today?

From Series: "How to Change the World"

When Jesus came to our world, he never intended to leave it unchanged. His was a mission to change everything: to give the fullest, most authentic demonstration of God’s love; to conquer sin and its deathly effects; to heal, restore, and bring life and light. Jesus’ work continues today—and He uses His people as His instruments to bring change to this world. (Certainly, it is not we ourselves who have power to change the world, but, empowered by God’s Spirit at work through His Word and Sacraments, we are transformed and empowered for Him to work through us.) Our Epiphany sermon series gives focus to how God is using us as His conduits to change the world.
