Be the Least

Two themes emerge toward the end of Jesus’ earthly ministry: Jesus explains repeatedly how He will be condemned, mistreated, and executed, but will rise again on the third day. His disciples, however, repeatedly argue over which of them is the greatest and who will reign with Jesus. In contrast, Jesus emphasizes that greatness in God’s kingdom is measured in self-sacrificing service, for Jesus Himself had come “to serve and give His life as a ransom for many.” What makes it so tempting to think more highly of ourselves than we ought? How does Jesus’ life of sacrifice and service—and His giving of His own life to redeem us—shape who we are as “Jesus followers?”
